Colour analysis for men
The colours that suit you
If this reads like a women's thing, here is the short version: undertone, depth, contrast and chroma are physiology, not gender. They decide which colours settle behind your face and which ones fight it — the same on any man as on anyone else.
Six questions worth settling
The ones a general guide skips — and the ones your own colouring answers.
Which navy
Navy is not one colour. A cool, deeper complexion carries an inky, blue-black navy; a warmer, lighter one is better served by a softer, greyed navy. Match the depth of the navy to the depth of your own colouring and it reads intentional, not borrowed.
Which grey
Cool undertones take a clean, blue-grey; warm undertones take a grey with a little brown in it (greige). The wrong grey is the fastest way to look tired in a photo — it fights your skin instead of settling behind it.
Gold or silver
This is undertone, decided in one look at your wrist. Warm undertones wear yellow gold and warm metals; cool undertones wear silver, steel and white gold. Watch case, buckle, ring, cufflink — keep them on the same side of that line.
Brown or black shoes
Contrast, not a rule. High contrast between hair, skin and brows carries black cleanly; lower, softer contrast is flattered by brown, tan and oxblood. If black shoes feel severe on you, that is why — and brown is the answer, not a compromise.
Which white shirt
Bright, cool complexions take optic white. Warm or softer complexions look better in off-white, ecru or cream — a pure white can drain them. It is the most-worn colour a man owns and the one most often bought wrong.
Which denim wash
Same logic as navy. Deeper, cooler colouring holds a dark rinse and raw indigo; warmer, lighter colouring is lifted by a mid or worn wash. The wash sets the contrast against everything you put with it, so it is worth getting right first.
