Cost per wear is price divided by the number of times you wear something. A £200 coat worn a hundred times costs £2 a wear; a £30 dress worn twice costs £15.
The arithmetic is trivial. The interesting part is where it misleads.
What it is genuinely good for
Comparing two versions of the same thing. Should you buy the £60 boots or the £180 ones? If the expensive pair lasts three times as long and you wear them all winter, the sums favour them. This is the question the formula answers well.
Working out what deserves budget. Sort your wardrobe by how often you actually wear things. Whatever is at the top is where money is well spent — usually a coat, everyday shoes, a bag, the trousers you live in. That list is often not where people spend.
Interrogating an occasion purchase. A dress for one wedding is priced per wear at whatever it cost. Sometimes that is fine. It should be a decision rather than an accident — wedding guest dress codes covers making the outfit work again.
The three ways it lies
1. It assumes you will wear the thing. The calculation is a forecast, and forecasts about our own behaviour are optimistic. "It is only £4 a wear if I wear it fifty times" is a sentence about a future that frequently does not happen.
The fix: use the honest number from something comparable you already own. If your last pair of heeled boots got worn eight times, use eight.
2. It ignores whether the expensive one lasts longer. Price and durability are correlated, not equivalent. A costly garment in a fragile fabric can fail sooner than a cheap one in a robust one, and plenty of expensive items are priced on the label rather than the construction.
The fix: judge durability from the garment. What makes a knit good quality and spotting quality in a product photo are the checks that actually predict it.
3. It says nothing about whether you should buy it at all. A very low cost per wear on something you did not need is not a saving. This is the failure mode the formula is most often used to justify, usually after the decision has already been made.
The version that works better
Ask three questions before the arithmetic.
- What does this replace? If nothing, it is an addition rather than an upgrade, and additions get worn less.
- What does it go with? Something that works with both of your neutrals will be worn several times more often than something that works with one. The capsule wardrobe method covers why.
- Does the colour suit me? The most under-considered variable. A garment in a colour that genuinely suits you gets worn far more than one that does not, and people rarely connect the two — they just find they never reach for it. Your colours has the palettes.
Then do the sum, with an honest wear count.
A rough guide
For most people, roughly:
- Under £1 a wear — excellent, and typical of a good coat or everyday shoes
- £1 to £5 — reasonable for most wardrobe items
- £5 to £20 — acceptable for occasion wear, questionable for everyday
- Over £20 — a one-off, and worth being deliberate about
Where finding it cheaper fits
The honest version: a lower price improves the ratio only if the garment lasts and gets worn. A cheaper version of something in your palette, in a fabric that survives, is a genuine improvement. A cheaper version of something you would not otherwise have bought is not.
